Media Studies Professor, Michael Frierson’s experimental dance film to premiere!

Icarus

Professor Michael Frierson’s experimental dance film, in collaboration with the school of Music, Theater and Dance, will premiere on Saturday, November 1st at 7:30pm at the UNCG Music Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

The film is a response to visiting composer, Professor Stacy Garrop’s collaborative piece with the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, Flight of Icarus. Dr. Frierson worked with choreographer, Jan Van Dyke, Professor Emeritus from the School of Dance to translate the music to visual imagery. The film uses found footage from the British Imperial War Museum that Professor Frierson states, “… has always been a sort of visual touchstone for me. I love the base side scratches on the 35mm, and all the imperfections the historical footage brings to the image.”

The film was shot in the Carmichael building studio using rear screen projection on a set former MFA student, Ben Withington, had constructed for a sequence in his thesis project.
