“Pariah” Expands and is now Showing in Theaters Across the Country

“Pariah” a film that MFA Alum, Vince Gonzalez (class of ’05) worked on has expanded and is now showing in theaters all over the country!

Media Studies Alum, David Gatten shows his work at the National Gallery of Art

Over the last 15 years, David Gatten (class of ’95) has explored the intersection of the printed word and moving image. Currently he is a visiting Professor and Distinguished Filmmaker in Residence at Duke University. David’s recent work is being featured this month in the film program at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Dr. Michael Frierson to be a guest on “The State of Things” on WUNC Radio

Dr. Michael Frierson of the Department of Media Studies will be a guest on “The State of Things” from WUNC radio (91.5 FM) tomorrow, Tuesday December 13th at noon.

Frierson will talk about his documentary FBI KKK. The film is the story of the filmmaker’s father, Dargan Frierson, an FBI agent in Greensboro, NC during the 1960s, and the intersection of his life with George Dorsett, the Imperial Kludd, or chaplain, of the United Klans of America under a program called COINTELPRO WHITE HATE.    In the late 60s, North Carolina had the largest active Klan membership of any Southern state, despite its progressive history. The film documents the life of Frierson’s father as the emerging New South replaced the Jim Crow era, and the personal friendship that developed as Frierson used Dorsett first to infiltrate, and then to neutralize the Klan in North Carolina.

Dr. Emilyl Edwards wins a Pixie Award

The American Pixel Academy has the goal of connecting creative visual professionals in the pixel media with educators who are giving wings to the next generation in our field.

MCA-I Media Pro Camp

Award-winning documentary filmmaker, animator and UNC-Greensboro media studies professor, Brett Ingram, joins NC Film Office Director Aaron Syrett in a keynote panel discussion on filmmaking in North Carolina at the MCA-I Media Pro Camp on December 6 at SAS in Cary. Ingram’s documentaries and animated films have screened at more than 150 festivals worldwide, winning thirty awards collectively, and have been aired by the Sundance Channel and PBS. His first feature documentary,Monster Road, won numerous awards including “Best Documentary” at the 2004 Slamdance Film Festival. The Media Pro Camp dinner keynote presentation will be followed by what industry professionals enjoy most – talking about the ups and downs of the business. These engaging and dynamic break-out sessions team up producers, writers, editors, directors, photographers, technicians, musicians, graphic artists and actors to discuss various aspects of media communications. Open and participatory, the content is guaranteed to be right on target because participants choose the topics! The event culminates with a “What’s Hot, What’s Not: Eye on the Industry” overview by event sponsor Panasonic. We hope to see you there!

“Nite Lite” a film by MFA candidate Mariah Dunn wins award at the 6th Annual Carrboro Film Festival

“Nite Lite” (Dir. Mariah Dunn) won a Kay Kyser Award for Best Student Film at the Carborro Film Festival on Nov. 20th 2011.

Carrboro Film Festival Kay Kyser Awards, are individually crafted by Carrboro sculptor Mike Roig. The awards are made entirely from recycled materials, primarily from right here in Carrboro. Every year brings new awards, and each piece is a little different.
